Chandigarh: Opposition municipal councillors of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress blamed local MP Kirron Kher for Thursday’s flood-like situation in the city, posting videos and images of their waterlogged wards.
AAP claim that Kher had done nothing for the city in the past eight years as MP. In reply, the BJP councillors accused AAP of blaming the MP for the heck of it, while itself remaining absent from her parliamentary constituency for a long time. The councillors of AAP even came into the well of the House, raising slogans against Kirron Kher. AAP councillor Prem Lata said: “What has Kirron Kher done for the city? She didn’t show up for a long time in the last eight years.”
AAP councillor Prem Lata also showed the videos and photographs of a submerged Sector 35 to the House to highlight the plight of commuters and householders. She said: “Things are in a bad shape in my area, where water accumulation leads to long traffic jams.” AAP councillor Damanpreet Singh said: “Almost the entire city was flooded today and the commuters suffered the most.”
Congress councillor Gurpreet Singh told TOI: “The MP should resign if she has no time for the city. She promises to deliver a smart city but, on Thursday, its smartness lay exposed after the first heavy rain of the season.” The Congress councillors protested against the clogged stormwater drainage system, blaming the MC and the UT administration for it.
In the evening, the Congress issued a statement that: “The rainwater entered many houses, damaging household articles. The money that the MC had allocated for cleaning the stormwater drainage system seems to have been diverted. The Congress demands fixing of responsibility and suitable action whoever has been negligent.”
