Tottenham Hotspur are close to a £20m deal for Wolverhampton Wanderers player Adama Traore.
Tottenham made a £15m bid for the Spain international which was turned down last week, with Wolves reportedly valuing Traore at £25m.
However, there is now an expectation that a full fee for the 25-year-old winger, who has been with Wolverhampton since 2018, can be reached before Monday’s transfer deadline.
Traore was on the bench in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Brentford but played in the last 15 minutes and watched a goal disallowed by the VAR for offside.
He has been a long-time target of Tottenham, who were in talks to sign Traore at the end of the summer transfer window. That interest remained despite a change of manager from former Wolverhampton coach Nuno Espirito Santo to Antonio Conte.
Traore’s contract expired in June 2023 and a new 15-month contract was on the table, with his current club keen to keep it. If Wolves and Spurs are able to agree to a fee, personal terms are not expected to be an issue.
Besides following Traore, Tottenham boss Conte is keen to strengthen his squad further by adding a midfielder and striker before the January window closes.
The latter could come in the form of Angers teenage striker Mohamed Ali Chou, who is said to have been offered to the Premier League side.
The 18-year-old, who was at Everton before moving to Angers 18 months ago, is worth up to £16.8m.
Ali-Chou has played five times for France’s Under-21 team and is also said to be attracting the interest of Borussia Dortmund’s Bundesliga side.
Is Traore a promotion for Tottenham?
Jack Wilkinson analysis
Before deciding whether Adama Traore will improve for Tottenham, it is important to determine what role he will play if he is to trade Wolverhampton for north London. After all, he’s not going to displace Harry Kane or Heung Min Son, the prolific and reliable attacking duo of Spurs.
With Steven Bergwijn the subject of Ajax’s interest, Traore could be brought in as a replacement for the Dutchman, and could make a direct competition to Lucas Moura, while there was even talk that he could be brought to Tottenham. Rear wing capacity.
If Traore moved to Tottenham, he would undoubtedly upgrade the club’s entertainment factor. Traore’s dribbles are complete, his dribbling success rate is out of range compared to Bergwijn and Moura, and he makes nearly five times as many passes from open play per 90 minutes.
But reservations arise about Traore’s suitability in perhaps the most important area – the end product. In 18 Premier League games with Wolverhampton this season, the Spaniard has not scored or assisted, and throughout his football career in England, he scored a goal or assist at half the rate of Mora and Bergwijn.
Could it be the case that Traore’s creativity was not fully utilized at Wolves? Could Conte really harness her into a linear force that includes Kane and Son? These are the questions Spurs will have to bear in mind, and the ones that have soared the appetites of Spurs fans after a barren January so far.
