FICCI cuts India’s growth aim

Industry body FICCI has downgraded India’s economic output estimate for this financial year by 40 basis points to 7% owing to geopolitical uncertainties and their impact on Asia’s third largest economy. The median growth forecast for agriculture and allied activities is pegged at 3%, while the industry and services sectors are likely to grow by 6.2% and 7.8%, respectively, during the fiscal year.

Retail inflation is seen at 6.7% in this fiscal year ending Mar. 31, in line with RBI’s projections. Inflation is expected to ease starting September and fall back into the 4% range only by June 2023.

Rajasthan’s Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot today said the way the ruling government is misusing central agencies including Enforcement Directorate is an indication that the democracy is in danger. “Our fight is to save the nation. Today, if they would have been in our place, they would have indulged in arson,” he said. Floor leaders of Opposition parties including Congress, CPI, CPI(M), IUML, NC, TRS, MDMK, NCP, DMK and RJD met in Parliament today. The opposition has been protesting in and outside of both houses of the Parliament over GST rate increase on essential items, inflation and other issues. Preparations underway to begin counting of votes for Presidential elections

Counting to begin at 11 am

The counting of votes to elect the 15th President of India will begin at 11 am on Thursday at the Parliament House. The counting will take place in Room No 63 in Parliament House and the result will be declared immediately after the counting. The immediate precincts of Room Number 63 have been declared as sanitised and “silent zone”. Only counting officers, officials deployed to assist the Rajya Sabha Secretary General, candidates and one authorised representative of each candidate, observers appointed by the Election Commission and media persons with valid passes will be allowed entry into the counting hall. Rajya Sabha Secretary General PC Mody is the returning officer for the Presidential election. The voting took place on July 18 and was completed in a peaceful manner.

BJP to hold ‘Abhinandan Yatra’ to mark Murmu’s victory

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday will be organising a road show ‘Abhinandan Yatra’ in the national capital to celebrate the likely victory of NDA Presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu. As per the plan, after declaration of election results, BJP chief J.P. Nadda will hold a road show from party’s Delhi unit office at Pandit Pant Marg to Rajpath on July 21 evening. Over 5,000 Delhi BJP workers will participate in the road show along with Nadda.

‘Vijay Diwas’: Odisha’s Uparbeda village all set to celebrate

Uparbeda, the tribal village in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district where NDA presidential nominee Draupadi Murmu was born, is in celebration mode and counting the hours when the result of the presidential election would be declared. The villagers have plans to observe Thursday as ‘Vijay Diwas’, convinced that their daughter would be elevated to the country’s top post.

Over 99 per cent of the total electors had cast their ballot in the poll that took place Monday, according to the Election Commission.Eight MPs, including BJP MPs Sunny Deol and Sanjay Dhotre, were among those who missed casting their votes.

A total of 4,809 electors, comprising 776 MPs and 4,033 elected MLAs, are entitled to vote in the election, but nominated MPs and MLAs, and Members of Legislative Council are not.

All ballot boxes from state assemblies had reached the Parliament’s strongroom on Tuesday evening and have been locked there since. The ballot boxes had been flown into the national capital as ‘Mr Ballot Box’ from across the states.

Polling for the presidential election was held between 10am to 5pm Monday at 31 locations including the Parliament house and 30 centres within state legislative assemblies.

Rajya Sabha Secretary General P C Mody, who is the Chief Returning Officer for the poll, will oversee the counting Thursday, the result of which is likely to be declared by the evening.

With ballot boxes from all states having reached the Parliament House, poll officials are ready for the counting in room number 63, the strongroom of Parliament where the boxes are guarded behind a round the clock security.

Ruling NDA’s Draupadi Murmu and Opposition’s Yashwant Sinha are pitted against each other in the contest, with votes clearly stacked in favour of Murmu, who, if elected, will be the first tribal woman to occupy the top constitutional post in the country.
